Colour temperature is one of the first specifications shown on any LED product — and one of the most misunderstood. The number in Kelvin describes the warmth or coolness of white light, not its brightness or quality. Getting it wrong by room is one of the most common lighting mistakes in residential renovation, and it is harder to fix after installation than most other errors.
Understanding the Kelvin Scale
The Kelvin scale as applied to light describes a theoretical relationship between the temperature of a heated black body and the colour it emits. In practice for lighting:
- 2700 K — warm white. Visually close to old incandescent bulbs. Slightly yellow-orange cast. Appropriate for living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas where a relaxed atmosphere is intended.
- 3000 K — warm white (slightly cooler). Common in hospitality and retail; works well in kitchens and bathrooms where clarity matters without feeling clinical.
- 4000 K — neutral white. No perceptible warmth or coolness under most conditions. Suitable for home offices, workshops and utility rooms.
- 5000–6500 K — daylight to cool daylight. Blue-white cast. Used in commercial spaces, some medical contexts, and by people who need to match materials under daylight conditions (e.g., graphic designers). Rarely appropriate for general residential use.
CRI: The Specification That Matters Alongside Colour Temperature
Colour Rendering Index (CRI, also Ra) measures how accurately a light source renders colours compared to a reference source. The scale runs from 0 to 100, with 100 representing perfect rendering against a defined reference illuminant.
In practice:
- CRI below 80: colours appear noticeably muted or shifted. Acceptable for utility spaces, corridors and storage areas.
- CRI 80–90: adequate for most living spaces. Standard for residential-grade LED products in the Czech market.
- CRI above 90: recommended for kitchens (food looks more natural), living rooms with artwork or coloured furnishings, and bathrooms. High-CRI products cost slightly more but the difference is visible.
Note that CRI and colour temperature are independent. A 2700 K bulb can have CRI 70 or CRI 95; the warm appearance does not imply good colour rendering. Always check the CRI value on the product specification sheet.
Room-by-Room Guidance
Living Room
2700–3000 K with CRI ≥ 90. The living room is used across the day and evening for varied activities — conversation, watching television, reading, occasional desk work. A warm-white ambient layer combined with dimmable control lets occupants reduce colour temperature impact by simply reducing intensity in the evening. If the room contains artwork or coloured textiles, CRI 90+ will show them more accurately.
Bedroom
2700 K with CRI ≥ 80. Bedrooms benefit most from the warmest end of the residential range. Evening exposure to 4000+ K light is associated with suppressed melatonin production — relevant for people who have difficulty sleeping. Task lighting over a reading area can use 3000 K without issue; the key is not mixing both in a way that makes the cooler source dominant in peripheral vision.
Kitchen
3000–4000 K with CRI ≥ 90. Food preparation requires adequate task illumination with reasonably accurate colour rendering. A warm white source (2700 K) makes raw meat and some vegetables harder to assess visually. Under-cabinet task lighting at 4000 K and a ceiling ambient at 3000 K is a common and effective combination. Many Czech kitchen renovations use a single 4000 K LED panel, which works but misses the layered-lighting benefit.
Bathroom
3000–4000 K with CRI ≥ 90. Mirror lighting for personal grooming requires accurate skin-tone rendering; CRI 90+ is worth specifying. Overhead ambient can run at 3000 K; a dedicated mirror luminaire at 4000 K and CRI 95 gives the most accurate results. Fixtures in wet zones must carry appropriate IP ratings (IP44 minimum for Zone 2, IP65 for Zone 1 per ČSN EN 60598-2-8).
Home Office
3500–4000 K with CRI ≥ 80. Sustained visual work — reading, screen use, detailed tasks — is generally easier under cooler, more neutral light. Research on the relationship between colour temperature and alertness during desk work shows a modest but measurable effect; 4000 K is the standard recommendation from lighting standards bodies (CIE, EN 12464-1) for office task lighting. CRI matters less here than in living spaces unless the work involves colour-critical tasks.
Utility Rooms, Corridors, Storage
4000 K with CRI 80 or higher. These spaces need clarity for brief, functional use. Energy efficiency and long lamp life are more important than colour atmosphere. Standard 4000 K commercial LED panels work well and are widely available in the Czech market at low cost.
Consistency Within Open-Plan Spaces
In open-plan kitchen-living areas — increasingly common in Czech apartment renovations — the colour temperature choice becomes more constrained. A 3000 K scheme works in both the living zone and the kitchen without feeling wrong in either. If you need 4000 K over the counter for task work, use a dedicated under-cabinet circuit and keep the ceiling ambient at 3000 K throughout the combined space.
Mixing 2700 K and 4000 K in adjacent zones that are visible simultaneously creates a visual tension that is difficult to ignore once noticed. The cooler zone always appears relatively greenish or blueish compared to the warm zone.
Dimming and Perceived Colour Temperature
Some LED products shift colour temperature when dimmed — a phenomenon called "dim-to-warm." Certain high-end products are specifically designed to move from 3000 K at full output to 2200 K at 10 % dim, mimicking the behaviour of incandescent bulbs. Most standard residential LEDs maintain approximately constant colour temperature across the dimming range, though cheap products may drift slightly. If consistent colour temperature across dim levels matters for a specific application, check the product datasheets or ask the supplier for measured data.
Practical Buying Notes for the Czech Market
Czech electrical retailers (Hornbach, OBI, Datart, dedicated lighting specialists) typically stock 2700 K and 4000 K as the primary options, with 3000 K available but less consistently so. Online channels (including Czech-language versions of European lighting distributors) offer wider selection. When buying in quantity for a renovation, verify that all fixtures from a specific colour temperature bin come from the same batch where possible — minor production variation between batches is common in the LED industry and can produce visible mismatches between otherwise identical products.
